History of Robert Russa Moton
Robert Russa Moton was a great educator who followed Booker T. Washington. He Robert Motonwas born on August 26, 1867(the son of slaves) and died in 1940. During his life time Moton did many wonderful things in the education field.
When he was 18 years old Moton enrolled into the college known as Hampton Institute. In 1890, Moton graduated and was a Commander in military discipline. He worked as a Commander for 25 years.
Moton then became the head official at the Tuskegee Institute. This happened after Dr. Booker T. Washington died. Washington was the first president at Tuskegee and also the founder in 1915.
After Robert Moton was named president at the institute, academic programs were improvised. There were more than 13 buildings added during his time as head official. There was a Junior College Program as well as a 4 year college program that allowed students to get their bachelor’s degree in several fields, including Agriculture, Home Economics, Mechanical Industry, and Education.
He was chosen to be a speaker at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. on May 30, 1922. His hard work was rewarded and he earned degrees from more than 5 colleges. He earned the Harmon Award in Race relations and the Spingard Medal.
He had to opt out of his presidency in 1935 because of health conditions. He made many contributions to education throughout his life.
